Juneau District Rifle Team defeats Mattoon AJROTC
Juneau District Rifle Team defeated Mattoon AJROTC 998.4 to 953.4 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row. Juneau District Rifle Team finishes the season in eighteenth place overall and fifth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They finished the season with a 6 - 1 record. Juneau District Rifle Team was led by, Nelson Abel who shot a 263.9. The remaining contributing members were Madeline Germain, Mackenzie Lam, and Timothy Shorten. Juneau District Rifle Team is from Juneau, AK, and is coached by Dianne Zemanek.
Mattoon AJROTC finished the season with a 2 - 5 record. They finishes the season in ninth place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. Mattoon AJROTC was led by, Larissa Kelly who shot a 259.5. The remaining contributing members were Connor Pickering, Isabel Spear, and Campbell Beadles. Mattoon AJROTC is from Mattoon, IL, and is coached by Todd Stokes.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
