Gulfport MCJROTC defeats Ozark AJROTC
Gulfport MCJROTC wins the first ever Orion National Air Rifle League Sporter Championship. Shooting a season high, from any team, Gulfport MCJROTC defeated Ozark AJROTC 1121 to 1111. Gulfport will also get the unique distinction of being the first team to go undefeated in the league, with a perfect 12 - 0 record. This is their combined record through the regular season and post-season play.
In the championship game Gulfport MCJROTC had four athletes shoot above the 275 mark. Jillian Tyler shot a 284, Brittany Robins a 283, Gabrielle Phelps a 279, and Rebecca Cook a 275. Gulfport MCJROTC is from Gulfport, MS, and is coached by LtCol John Owens.
The Most Value Player award goes to Jillian Tyler. The MVP is the athlete, from the winning team, who had the highest post-season average. Tyler represented Gulfport MCJROTC in all three post-season games and average 280.0 in those games.
Ozark AJROTC tied their own season high in the championship game, an 1111. They first shot this team score in last week's semi-final game against Henderson County AJROTC. In the championship game Ozark AJROTC was led by Kaya Hauser who shot a 281. The remaining contributing members were Erika Bradley, Josiah Custer, Kierstyn Olinger, and Elizabeth Vigneaux. Ozark AJROTC is from Ozark, MO, and is coached by Terry Thompson.
While the Orion National Air Rifle League season comes to a close, both teams still have a lot of shooting to do this school year. Both Gulfport MCJROTC and Ozark AJROTC have qualified for the Marine Corps and Army JROTC Service Championships respectively.
