Southern Indiana Sharpshooters Narrowly Defeats Versailles American Legion
Southern Indiana Sharpshooters edged out Versailles American Legion 741 to 739 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Southern Indiana Sharpshooters is in third place in their Division with a 1 - 1 record. Southern Indiana Sharpshooters was led by Lane Parks who shot a 201. The remaining contributing members were Seth Hartwick, Abby Seitz, and Jonathon Thurman. Southern Indiana Sharpshooters is from Jasper, IN, and is coached by Daniel Lawson, Brad Hartwick.
Versailles American Legion dropped to 1 - 1 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Versailles American Legion was led by Jamie Thomas who shot a 230. Next up Southern Indiana Sharpshooters will compete against Wildlife Achievement Chapter Izaak Walton League from Monrovia, MD. Wildlife Achievement Chapter Izaak Walton League currently has a 1 - 1 record. Versailles American Legion will compete against Lake Houston 4-H from Kingwood, TX. Lake Houston 4-H currently has a 2 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
