Coweta Co 4-H defeats Versailles American Legion

Shooting their highest score of the season Coweta Co 4-H defeated Versailles American Legion 987 to 810 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Coweta Co 4-H is in second place in their Division with a 3 - 1 record. Coweta Co 4-H was led by Cody Piper who shot a 255. The remaining contributing members were Jennifer Brinton, Madison Dill, and Hunter Arrington. Coweta Co 4-H is from Senoia, GA, and is coached by Michael Piper.

Versailles American Legion dropped to 1 - 4 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Versailles American Legion was led by Nathan May who shot a 222. The remaining contributing members were Kaitlyn Schwanholt, Richard Block, and Jamie Thomas. Versailles American Legion is from Versailles, IN, and is coached by Steve Scoggins.

Next up Coweta Co 4-H will compete against Wildlife Achievement Chapter Izaak Walton League from Monrovia, MD. Wildlife Achievement Chapter Izaak Walton League currently has a 2 - 2 record. Versailles American Legion will compete against Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club from San Jose, CA. Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club currently has a 2 - 2 record.

These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
