Maspenock Rod and Gun Club Narrowly Defeats Queen Anne Marksmanship advances to Semi-Finals
Second seed Maspenock Rod and Gun Club edged out seventh seed Queen Anne Marksmanship 1512 to 1496 in the quarter final game of the National Air Rifle League Precision Tournament. Maspenock will advance to the semi-final game to take on Maspenock Rod and Gun Club.
Their second year in the league Maspenock Rod and Gun Club advanced to the post-season with an at-large bid. This is also Maspenock's second year making it to the post-season. They finished the regular season with a 4 - 3 record in the Junior Rifle Club Champions Division.
In the quarter final game Maspenock Rod and Gun Club was led by ZUZU DEMETRIUS who shot a 386. The remaining contributing members were ALIYA BUTT, BRENDAN SEITZ, KRISTINE PETERS, and SHOSHANA TROEN-KRASNOW. Maspenock Rod and Gun Club is from Milford, MA, and is coached by Manuel Snyderman.
Queen Anne Marksmanship was led by Matt Dorey who shot a 379. The remaining contributing members were Erin Walsh, Mason Mackenzie, Nick Dorey, and Sophia Veloz. Queen Anne Marksmanship is from Rhodesdale, MD, and is coached by Penny Austin-Richardson.
The post-season tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Precision League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
