Gulfport MCJROTC Advances to Title Game After Defeating Lebanon AJROTC

Second seed Gulfport MCJROTC edged out sixth seed Lebanon AJROTC 1092 to 1079 last week in the National Air Rifle League semi-final game. They will take on top seed Zion Benton AJROTC in the league championship game this week.

Gulfport is the defending league champion. Last year they defeated Ozark AJROTC is the championship game. In fact, Gulfport MCJROTC is the only sporter team to have never lost in league play, they are 21 - 0 in the two seasons of the National Air Rifle League.

In the semi-final game Gulfport MCJROTC was led by Gabrielle Phelps who shot an impressive 284. The remaining contributing members were Rebecca Cook, Mackayla Bourgeois, Taylor Saulters, and . Gulfport MCJROTC is from Gulfport, MS, and is coached by LtCol John Owens.

Lebanon AJROTC made it to the semi-final game after upsetting third seed Summerlin Academy AJROTC two weeks ago. Lebanon AJROTC made it to the post-season with an at large bid. They finished third in the highly competitive Army JROTC Champions Division with a 5 - 2 record in the regular season.

In the semi-final game Lebanon AJROTC was led by Lara Lewis who shot a 273. The remaining contributing members were Jake Slingluff, Destry Brooks, Hailey Clevenger, and Brenden Warner. Lebanon AJROTC is from Lebanon, OR, and is coached by Mark Smith.

The post-season tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
