Pueblo County AJROTC Narrowly Defeats Flowing Wells AJROTC
Pueblo County AJROTC edged out Flowing Wells AJROTC 1059 to 1046 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Pueblo County AJROTC finishes the season in second place in their Division with a 6 - 1 record. Pueblo County AJROTC was led by Hannah Brown who shot a 272. The remaining contributing members were Nathaniel Romero, Jennifer Knox, and Kayla Mihelich. Pueblo County AJROTC is from Pueblo, CO, and is coached by Arnold Lewis.
Snapping a two game win streak Flowing Wells AJROTC dropped to 2 - 5 on the season. They finish the season in sixth place in their Division. Flowing Wells AJROTC was led by Anthony Duran Phoumphaka who shot a 265. The remaining contributing members were Samuel Salazar, Israel Martinez, and Ben Spiegel. Flowing Wells AJROTC is from Tucson, AZ, and is coached by MAJ Bob DeWitt.
Pueblo County will go on to represent Army JROTC in the post-season Invitational Tournament. They are the number four seed and will compete against fifth seed South Effingham NJROTC in the opening round game. The post-season will begin the week after Thanksgiving.
These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
