C. T. Johnson AJROTC defeats Bethel AFJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season C. T. Johnson AJROTC defeated Bethel AFJROTC 1410 to 1340 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row, C. T. Johnson AJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 4 - 0 record. C. T. Johnson AJROTC was led by Sebastian Gomez who shot a 364. The remaining contributing members were Bella Gamez, Collin Irwin, and Bradley Knight. C. T. Johnson AJROTC is from San Antonio, TX, and is coached by MAJ Tom Groggett.
Bethel AFJROTC dropped to 0 - 3 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Bethel AFJROTC was led by GERRITT WIEDMEIER who shot a 340. The remaining contributing members were SAVANNAH MARTIN, LEANNA BOYATT, and BRENDON STYF. Bethel AFJROTC is from Spanaway, WA, and is coached by Steve Tkach.
Next up C. T. Johnson AJROTC will compete against Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC from Albuquerque, NM. Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC currently has a 4 - 0 record. Bethel AFJROTC will compete against Northside AJROTC from Fort Smith, AR. Northside AJROTC currently has a 2 - 1 record.
These two teams are competing in the JROTC Precision Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
