Onate NJROTC defeats American Legion Post 41
Onate NJROTC defeated American Legion Post 41 950 to 740 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Onate NJROTC is in eighth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' division. They currently have a 1 - 0 record. Onate NJROTC was led by Crystal Parra who shot a 257. The remaining contributing members were Rocio Valadez, Alyssa Epperson, and Levi Richins. Onate NJROTC is from Las Cruces, NM, and is coached by Robert Rodriguez.
American Legion Post 41 currently has a 0 - 1 record. American Legion Post 41 was led by Gavin Tharp who shot a 192. The remaining contributing members were Dillon Young, Victoria Smith, and Matthew Junkins. American Legion Post 41 is from Elk Garden, WV, and is coached by Rod Ryan.
Next up Onate NJROTC will compete against Cookeville American Legion Post 46 from Cookeville, TN. Cookeville American Legion Post 46 currently has a 0 - 1 record. While American Legion Post 41 will compete against Hickman County JROTC from Centerville, TN. Hickman County JROTC currently has a 1 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
