Pueblo County AJROTC Upsets Zion Benton NJROTC
Pueblo County AJROTC upset Zion Benton NJROTC 1086 to 1085 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Pueblo County AJROTC was able to win despite averaging 15 points lower than Zion Benton NJROTC coming into this game.
Pueblo County AJROTC finishes the regular season in fourth place overall and second place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 5 - 2 record. Pueblo County AJROTC was led by, Nathaniel Romero who shot a 277. The remaining contributing members were Jennifer Knox, Hannah Brown, and Kayla Mihelich. Pueblo County AJROTC is from Pueblo, CO, and is coached by Arnold Lewis.
Snapping a six game win streak Zion Benton NJROTC finished the regular season with a 6 - 1 record. They finishes the season in first place overall and first place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. Zion Benton NJROTC was led by, Regina Raquino who shot a 274. The remaining contributing members were Halie Creekmore, Jeremiah Vonzell, and Alexia Resendiz. Zion Benton NJROTC is from Zion, IL, and is coached by Dan Hackstein.
Both Pueblo County AJROTC and Zion Benton NJROTC will advance to the postseason's Championship Tournament. Respectively they are the number four and one seeds. Pueblo County AJROTC will take on Summerlin Academy (4 - 3) in their quarterfinal matchup. Zion Benton NJROTC will take on South Panola AFJROTC (4 - 3). The postseason begins 26 November 2018.
These two teams are competing in the Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, where teams compete for their conference's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all conferences advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
