South Effingham NJROTC Narrowly Defeats North Brunswick AJROTC
South Effingham NJROTC edged out North Brunswick AJROTC 1041 to 1028 last week in the National Air Rifle League. South Effingham NJROTC finishes the regular season in fifth place overall and second place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 5 - 2 record. South Effingham NJROTC was led by, Jacob Stapleton who shot a 266. The remaining contributing members were Chaeston Nomayer, Brandon Wojtowicz, and Gabrielle Call. South Effingham NJROTC is from Guyton, GA, and is coached by Terry Stautberg.
North Brunswick AJROTC finished the season with a 3 - 4 record. They finishes the regular season in twelfth place overall and third place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. North Brunswick AJROTC was led by, Delaney Larson who shot a 270. The remaining contributing members were Karina Betancourt, Heidi Navarro, and Nallely Miranda. North Brunswick AJROTC is from Leland, NC, and is coached by George L. Williams.
Both teams will advance to the postseason. South Effingham NRJOTC is the number five seed in the Championship Tournament. Their first round opponent is Moanalua High School. North Brunswick AJROTC is the number three seed in the Invitational Tournament. Their first round game is against C. T. Johnson ARJOTC. The postseason begins December 2nd.
These two teams are competing in the Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, where teams compete for their conference's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all conferences advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
