Fontana MCJROTC defeats Tempe Union High School District AJROTC
Fontana MCJROTC defeated Tempe Union High School District AJROTC 1040 to 1010 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row. Fontana MCJROTC finishes the season in tenth place overall and third place within their 'Marine Corps Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 5 - 2 record. Fontana MCJROTC was led by, Moses Ramirez who shot a 265. The remaining contributing members were Dylan Watanabe, Emily Romero, and Jasmine Arguello. Fontana MCJROTC is from Fontana, CA, and is coached by MSgt Wayne Harkley.
Tempe Union High School District AJROTC finished the season with a 1 - 6 record. They finishes the season in twentieth place overall and ninth place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. Tempe Union High School District AJROTC was led by, Joseph Sweeney who shot a 261. The remaining contributing members were Jacob Manoguerra, Ariana Copley, and Alexandria Dodd . Tempe Union High School District AJROTC is from Tempe, AZ, and is coached by MAJ Robert Fore.
Fontana MCJROTC will advance to the postseason's Invitational Tournament. They are the number one seed. Their first round game will be against East River AJROTC. The postseason begins December 2nd.
These two teams are competing in the Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, where teams compete for their conference's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all conferences advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
