Lebanon AJROTC Narrowly Defeats Summerlin Academy AJROTC

Sixth seed Lebanon AJROTC edged out third seed Summerlin Academy AJROTC 1084 to 1081 last week in the National Air Rifle Sporter League Tournament.

This was the first year of league play for both Lebanon AJROTC and Summerlin Academy AJROTC, with both teams having remarkable success. During the regular season both teams competed in arguable the most difficult division, the Army JROTC Champions Division. Summerlin won the division with a 7 - 0 record. Lebanon finished third with a 5 - 2 record.

In their quarter final game Lebanon AJROTC was led by Destry Brooks who shot a 274. The remaining contributing members were Jake Slingluff, Lara Lewis, Logan Hibbert, and Hailey Clevenger. Lebanon AJROTC is from Lebanon, OR, and is coached by Mark Smith.

Lebanon AJROTC advances to the semi-finals to take on second seed and defending league champion Gulfport MCJROTC.

In their quarter final game Summerlin Academy AJROTC was led by Nick Cheshire who shot a 275. The remaining contributing members were Allen Gubbini, Ronald Aytona, Trevor Grimes, and Zarek Pearce. Summerlin Academy AJROTC is from Bartow, FL, and is coached by Steven beck.

The post-season tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
