Kealakehe Rifle Team defeats Southern Indiana Sharpshooters
Kealakehe Rifle Team defeated Southern Indiana Sharpshooters 838 to 784 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row, Kealakehe Rifle Team is in third place in their Division with a 3 - 0 record. Kealakehe Rifle Team was led by Bradley Rutherford who shot a 222. The remaining contributing members were Sean Riguis, Esaias Furtado, and Nicholas Muniar. Kealakehe Rifle Team is from Kailua-Kona, HI, and is coached by 1SG Dave Starnes.
Southern Indiana Sharpshooters dropped to 1 - 2 on the season. They are currently in seventh place in their Division. Southern Indiana Sharpshooters was led by Emilee Seitz who shot a 221. The remaining contributing members were Abigayle Seitz, Seth Hartwick, and Jalen Whitsitt. Southern Indiana Sharpshooters is from Jasper, IN, and is coached by Daniel Lawson and Jason Maschino.
Next up Kealakehe Rifle Team will compete against Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club from San Jose, CA. Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club currently has a 2 - 1 record. Southern Indiana Sharpshooters will compete against Baldwin High School from Wailuku, HI. Baldwin High School currently has a 3 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
