Tempe Union AJROTC defeats New Caney AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Tempe Union AJROTC defeated New Caney AJROTC 1009 to 960 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. With the win, Tempe Union AJROTC is in eighth place overall and fifth place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 2 - 0 record. Tempe Union AJROTC was led by Sam Lumbra who shot a 272. The remaining contributing members were Blair Chance, Joseph Sweeney, and Jacob Manoguerra. Tempe Union AJROTC is from Tempe, AZ, and is coached by MAJ Robert Fore.
New Caney AJROTC currently has a 1 - 1 record. After the loss they are in twenty-fourth place overall. New Caney AJROTC was led by Trevor Gaines who shot a 243. The remaining contributing members were Kade Rawlins, Wilber Morales, and Cameron Richner. New Caney AJROTC is from New Caney, TX, and is coached by CW5 Jimenez.
This coming week Tempe Union AJROTC has a bye week. While New Caney AJROTC will compete against Onate NJROTC from Las Cruces, NM. Onate NJROTC currently has a 2 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
