Summerville NJROTC Narrowly Defeats Northwood AJROTC
Summerville NJROTC edged out Northwood AJROTC 939 to 930 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Summerville NJROTC is in seventh place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 1 - 2 record. Summerville NJROTC was led by Abigail Aquino who shot a 248. The remaining contributing members were Parker Cross, James Broach, and Sullivan Thompson. Summerville NJROTC is from Summerville, SC, and is coached by Steve Compton.
Snapping a two game win streak Northwood AJROTC currently has a 2 - 1 record. Shooting their highest team score of the season Northwood AJROTC was led by Matthew Hofner who shot a 242. The remaining contributing members were Brooklyn Delpapa, Cayce Matlock, and Jack West. Northwood AJROTC is from Shreveport, LA, and is coached by LTC Byron Lafield.
This coming week Summerville NJROTC has a bye week. While Northwood AJROTC will compete against Robert G. Cole AJROTC from San Antonio, TX. Robert G. Cole AJROTC currently has a 0 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
