Hopewell AJROTC defeats Versailles American Legion
Shooting their highest score of the season Hopewell AJROTC defeated Versailles American Legion 1041 to 1019 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Hopewell AJROTC is in tenth place overall and seventh place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 4 - 1 record. Hopewell AJROTC was led by, Payden Heckman who shot a 275. The remaining contributing members were Emily Hurd, Jalayah Harrison, and Korlee Burton. Hopewell AJROTC is from Huntersville, NC, and is coached by LTC Shawn W. Cowley.
Versailles American Legion currently has a 2 - 3 record. After the loss they are in twentieth place overall and second place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season Versailles American Legion was led by, Maggie Holt who shot a 261. The remaining contributing members were Richard Block, Joseph Cairns, and Trenton Franklin. Versailles American Legion is from Versailles, IN, and is coached by Steve Scoggins.
Next up Hopewell AJROTC will compete against West Broward AJROTC from Pembroke Pines, FL. West Broward AJROTC currently has a 5 - 0 record. While Versailles American Legion will compete against Pearl River NJROTC from Pearl River, LA. Pearl River NJROTC currently has a 4 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
