Sutter Union High School defeats West Springfield High School

Sutter Union High School defeated West Springfield High School 2375.5 to 2350.4 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Sutter Union High School was led by Marissa Fedora who shot a 611.9. The remaining contributing members were Savannah Criddle, Jadyn Morgan, and Lily Miller. They are from Sutter, CA, and are coached by Allen Jaynes.

Sutter Union High School is competing in the Champions Division where they finish the regular season in sixth place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they finish in fourth place. They finished the regular season with a 2 - 5 record.

The cut scores for next season are still unofficial, however thanks to their performance this season Sutter Union High School preliminarily qualifies for the Champions Division in the 2023 National Air Rifle League Season. To complete their qualification, they must still shoot a 2210 or higher in a sanctioned competition within the next year. An equivalent three-position team score will also count towards their qualification.

West Springfield High School was led by Tess Hines who shot a 609.4. The remaining contributing members were Grace Corbett, Kai Gagliano, and Olivia Rummler. West Springfield High School is from Springfield, VA, and is coached by Christopher Corbett.

West Springfield High School is also competing in the Champions Division where they finish the regular season in tenth place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they finish in fifth place. They finished the regular season with a 3 - 4 record.

The cut scores for next season are still unofficial, however thanks to their performance this season West Springfield High School preliminarily qualifies for the Champions Division in the 2023 National Air Rifle League Season. To complete their qualification, they must still shoot a 2210 or higher in a sanctioned competition within the next year. Post-season teams and squadding will be posted to the league website and emailed to coaches shortly.

Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.

The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.

The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 60 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
