Aiken NJROTC Upsets South Effingham NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Aiken NJROTC upset South Effingham NJROTC 1055 to 1049 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Aiken NJROTC was able to win despite averaging 19 points lower than South Effingham NJROTC coming into this game.
With the win, Aiken NJROTC is in fifth place in their Division with a 2 - 2 record. Aiken NJROTC was led by Isabelle Blystone who shot a 273. The remaining contributing members were Dalton Dunson, Carly Burgess, and Haydon Larson. Aiken NJROTC is from Aiken, SC, and is coached by LT Timothy Marinelli.
South Effingham NJROTC dropped to 2 - 2 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season South Effingham NJROTC was led by Lucas Payne who shot a 265. The remaining contributing members were William Pierson, William Blakeney, and Joseph Keeton. South Effingham NJROTC is from Guyton, GA, and is coached by Terry Stautberg.
Next up Aiken NJROTC will compete against Parlier NJROTC from Parlier, CA. Parlier NJROTC currently has a 0 - 3 record. South Effingham NJROTC will compete against Ramona NJROTC from Ramona, CA. Ramona NJROTC currently has a 3 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
