Pebble Hills NJROTC Upsets Los Alamos NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Pebble Hills NJROTC upset Los Alamos NJROTC 945 to 865 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Pebble Hills NJROTC was able to win despite averaging 23 points lower than Los Alamos NJROTC coming into this game.
With the win, Pebble Hills NJROTC is in seventh place in their Division with a 1 - 3 record. Pebble Hills NJROTC was led by Ruben Ramirez who shot a 254. The remaining contributing members were Destiny Montanez, Alejandro Tizcareno, and David Carpio. Pebble Hills NJROTC is from El Paso, TX, and is coached by Anthony J. Arellano.
Los Alamos NJROTC dropped to 0 - 4 on the season. They are currently in eighth place in their Division. Los Alamos NJROTC was led by Neil Wilkerson who shot a 243. The remaining contributing members were Caden Noakes, David Kwei, and Michael Archuleta. Los Alamos NJROTC is from Los Alamos, Uni, and is coached by Timothy Graziani.
Next up Pebble Hills NJROTC will compete against Laurens NJROTC from Laurens, SC. Laurens NJROTC currently has a 1 - 3 record. Los Alamos NJROTC will compete against Union Pines NJROTC from Cameron, NC. Union Pines NJROTC currently has a 2 - 1 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
