The Shooters Edge defeats Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC

The top seeded Shooters Edge defeated fourth seed Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC 1553 to 1491 last week in the National Air Rifle League Precision Championship Tournament. The Shooters Edge remains undefeated in the season, improving to 9 - 0. The Shooters Edge was led by Mary Tucker who shot a 394. The remaining contributing members were Matthew Sanchez, Lauren McMahan, and Taryn Granger. The Shooters Edge is from Sarasota, FL, and is coached by Robert Tucker.

The Shooters Edge will advance to the championship game where they will take on the number two seed Georgia Competitive Shooters. This will be the second meeting between these two teams. They first meet in week five of the regular season, with The Shooters Edge winning by 20 points.

Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC finishes the season with a 7 - 2 record, including a second place finish in the JROTC Precision Champions Division. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC was led by Kailia Jones who shot a 383. The remaining contributing members were Kirsten Coombes, Jared Tipton, Logan Schartung, and Julia Flake. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC is from Fountain, CO, and is coached by Rodney Smith.

The post-season tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Precision League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
