Rio Salado Sportsman's Club defeats Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club
Rio Salado Sportsman's Club defeated Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club 1520 to 1487 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Rio Salado Sportsman's Club finishes the regular season in fourth place overall and third place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They finished the season with a 4 - 3 record. Rio Salado Sportsman's Club was led by, Brooklyn Wilkins who shot a 391. The remaining contributing members were Mikayla Sedgwick, Roman Karadsheh, and Hunter Mantle. Rio Salado Sportsman's Club is from Mesa, AZ, and is coached by John Karadsheh.
Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club finished the regular season with a 3 - 4 record. They finishes the season in sixth place overall and fourth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club was led by, Kayley Pasko who shot a 386. The remaining contributing members were Taylor Niemiec, Abbigail Renger, and Veronica Martino. Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club is from Stratford, CT, and is coached by CPT Alan Wilcoxson and Josie Burzynski.
Both Rio Salado Sportsman's Club Shooters and Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club will advance to the Championship Tournament. Rio Salado Sportsman's Club as the number four seed. Their quarter-final match up is against Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC who has a 4 - 3 record this season. Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club is the number six seed, and they will take on Robinson High School who has a 5 - 2 record. The Championship Tournament starts next week on 26 November 2018.
These two teams are competing in the Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
