Walton County 4-H Wins League Championship Edging Out Pierre Junior Shooters
By the closest of margins Walton County 4-H wins the 2017 Orion National BB Gun Championship. Both teams scored 1904 points. By rule, the tie was settled by highest number of "inner tens." Walton County 4-H won the tie 94 to 88.
Once again Lucy Peters lead the way for Walton County, shooting an amazing 394. Peters has been performing well all season. Her 394 in the championship game was the sixth time this season that Peters shot a 390 or better. To put her score in perspective, no other athlete in the league shot a 390 or better all season. Her performance wins her the Most Valuable Player award.
The close finish of the championship game underscores just how good these two teams have been. Pierre Junior Shooters won the prestigious Champions Division in the regular season with a perfect 7 - 0 record. Walton County finished second with a 6 - 1 record. By virtue of seasonal average Walton County was seeded number one in the post-season tournament, Pierre Junior Shooters was seeded second. The difference between their respective seasonal averages was a single point. Uniquely, Pierre Junior Shooters won the Daisy National BB Gun championship in 2016, Walton County won in 2015.
This was Walton County's second trip to the championship game. Last season Walton County finished second in the league to fellow Georgian Carroll County 4-H.
Walton County 4-H championship team was Lucy Peters, Jordan Smothers, Brycen Gran, Tony Stacy, and Jackson Davis. Walton County 4-H is from Monroe, GA, and is coached by William Carlan.
Pierre Junior Shooters Pierre Junior Shooters was led by Justin Merriman who shot a 383. The remaining team members were Jessica Hays, Rylie Stoeser, Jenna Kruger, and Alee Smith. Pierre Junior Shooters is from Pierre, SD, and is coached by Sean Kruger.
These two teams competed in the Post-Season Tournament of the Orion National BB Gun League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for BB Gun teams. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season. Followed by a single-elimination tournament for the top four teams who competed for the league championship.
BB Gun programs teach gun safety and competitive marksmanship skills to athletes 8 to 15 years of age. Each game in the league teams compete in what is known as a four-position match. Each athlete shot 10 shots in four different shooting positions, prone, standing, sitting and kneeling at a distance of 5m. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is the sum of each team's five athletes.
