West Carteret NJROTC Upsets Binghamton Rifle Club
Shooting their highest score of the season West Carteret NJROTC upset Binghamton Rifle Club 982 to 978 last week in the National Air Rifle League. West Carteret NJROTC was able to win despite averaging 17 points lower than Binghamton Rifle Club coming into this game.
With the win, West Carteret NJROTC is in eighth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 2 - 3 record. West Carteret NJROTC was led by, James Gaskill who shot a 259. The remaining contributing members were Angelina Neufeld, Atlee Pool, and Hayden Winchell. West Carteret NJROTC is from Moorehead City, NC, and is coached by Col Giani.
Snapping a two game win streak Binghamton Rifle Club currently has a 4 - 1 record. After the loss they are in seventeenth place overall and first place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Binghamton Rifle Club was led by, Jonah Allen who shot a 263. The remaining contributing members were Claudia Allen, Simon Joyner, and Jennifer Huang. Binghamton Rifle Club is from Binghamton, NY, and is coached by Peter Matwey.
Next up West Carteret NJROTC will compete against Stranahan MCJROTC from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Stranahan MCJROTC currently has a 2 - 3 record. While Binghamton Rifle Club will compete against United South MCJROTC from Laredo, TX. United South MCJROTC currently has a 4 - 1 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
