United South MCJROTC defeats Grossmont NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season United South MCJROTC defeated Grossmont NJROTC 1057 to 984 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, United South MCJROTC is in second place overall and first place within their 'Marine Corps Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 3 - 1 record. United South MCJROTC was led by Abdiel Lara who shot a 267. The remaining contributing members were Antonio Munoz, Matthew Altman, and Diego Hernandez. United South MCJROTC is from Laredo, TX, and is coached by James Jordan.
Snapping a four game win streak Grossmont NJROTC currently has a 4 - 1 record. After the loss they are in eleventh place overall and third place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. Grossmont NJROTC was led by Calista Zaenger who shot a 264. The remaining contributing members were Jocelyn Brown-Hill, Summer Oraha, and Paulina Mendoza. Grossmont NJROTC is from El Cajon, CA, and is coached by Mark Brosnan.
Next up United South MCJROTC will compete against Summerville NJROTC from Summerville, SC. Summerville NJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record. While Grossmont NJROTC will compete against Mauldin NJROTC from MAULDIN, SC. Mauldin NJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
